ok. i am another vicim of the chevy malibu problem. about a week ago my car had the check engine light go on. so....... i went ahead and , you know, checked all the connectors on intake, starter, etc.... Then when i go to start my car it wont start. The engine turns over but it doesnt run. At first i thought it was the fuel lines and pump but i replaced the pump and still nothing. when i turn the key, all the gauges go up. Its weird. i don't have a clue as to what happened. the only thing i know was that the last thing i touched before having the problem was the intake connectors. If anyone has a clue to what could have happened please tell me asap. or if anyone can tell me where i could get help to fix this problem i would greately appreciate it. thanks, i hope everyone the best of luck with their malibus!

Having same type of problem. Believe anti-theft system is the problem, but have not been able to reset it to allow start. If a method for resetting or disabling anti-theft system is known, would appreciate info.

Hi, I have the same problem 4 times they have changed battery, fuel pump, fuel sensor, and said the fuel lines did not have enoug pressur. I think this should be a recall....Now they say it is the Ignition switch an pass. lock sensor. From what I have been reading this seems to fix alot of the other malibus out there with this problem. Auto zone has ignition switch for 87.99

I just experienced this problem today on my 1999 V6 Malibu. The gauges shot up like crazy but i just gave it some gas and it started. The engine seems to run slower though. I'll check out that switch problem.

HI...I have a 2000 Malibu LS, about 2 to 3 weeks ago I was driving it and it shuts off. When trying to start it back up...it Misfires and makes other noises. It finally starts but when I give it gas it sputters and misfires didnt go far before it shut off again. Now it wont stay started at all and still does the Misfiring and Other noises when trying to start. I had the Fuel filter changed and had a Tune up and its still doing the same thing...wont start, misfires, etc....a person looked at my fuel pump for me to see if it was pumping and they said the fuel pump was fine. Can anyone please please help me! You can email me @ ymf_ent@yahoo.com or post abut my post on here.

To reset your car so your ignition will start you will need to let the car set for 10 minutes with the key left on...I have to do this at least once a week. The car will reset itself and you should be able to restart your car.

I have a 2002 Malibu. A couple of weeks ago I tried to turn on the car but it wouldn't turn over all the way. The dealership took a look at it and found that the Theft System light was on, which in turn turned off the fuel to the car. I guess what they did was disconnected the battery, and let it sit for a while to reset the system (but you have to make sure the radio is off otherwise it locks the radio and you won't be able to use it, then have to pay to get the code to unlock it....big hassle) and it started up easy again. Well yesterday the same thing happened AGAIN, and they tried the battery, they tried leaving the key in the ignition to reset, but nothing worked. So they were going to run a diagnostic test on the system, and when they got it to the place the car started up fine again. They are thinking it might be something to do with the ignition cylinder, I have yet to get an estimate at how much it will cost. So I'm waiting for my car to not work again so they can run that test again to see what truely is the problem. joy.

I'm having the same problem with my 2003 Malibu. I've found that the theft system resets quicker if you turn off the stereo and hold down 1 & 4 on the stereo for 5-10 seconds (the manual says this resets it). Sometimes it works and sometimes I just have to sit with the key in on position for a while. I've also found that when the car is in the sun and it's a particularly hot day it's worse than when parked in the shade. I've been told its a sensor in the ignition that has a short and triggers the anti-theft system and locks out the ignition. I'm going to try putting in a toggle switch to the sensor and just turning the bastard off on hot days.

:I hope you found a solution as I just had this happen with our 2000 Malibu with V6. Travelled 120 miles to take son to college and just quit in parking lot of dorm. Tries to restart after sitting for awhile but only lasts a few seconds quits. Seems like no fuel so suspect a fuel pump, but odd how it just quit with no warning or running rough. Any ideas?( HI...I have a 2000 Malibu LS, about 2 to 3 weeks ago I was driving it and it shuts off. When trying to start it back up...it Misfires and makes other noises. I took my 2002 Malibu in for service for last week for the same reason. The mehanic said it was the anti theft system. He told me that if it happened again to turn the key to the on postion and leave it there for 10 minutes. Then turn the key back to the off postion and then restart the car. It worked this morning.

I have a 2000 Malibu that I bought used off a repo dealer. It seems someone has figured out how to bypass the anti theft device because my car has been working fine without the original manufacterer key from the dealer with the resistor in it since I got it. What I noticed was that in the fusebox by the driver side when you open the door, next to the fuses there is a plastic covering where there is a large bundle of different color wires are coming out and running down through the side and under the carpet. One wire that I noticed was separated from the bundle and it has been cut 4 inches after coming out from next to the fuses. It is a gray colored wire. I never really paid much attention to it or bothered to look for the other end of the wire. One day when my car wouldnt start and showed the same symptoms as previous victims, I naturally suspected it to be the passlock system preventing me from driving my car. I took my car apart and was messing with it with a potentiometer because I thought the reason was the anti-theft system didnt recognize my key (which was puzzling because I NEVER once had the resistor key with it and it never failed). So I figured someone must have figured out how to supply direct power to the fuel pump, without going through the BCM. It turns out that that gray wire that was cut was the wire that connects the fuel pump's power supply wire to the BCM. It supplies the power to the fuel pump, only after the BCM gives the signal. All they did was connect the wire to a fuse in the fusebox that has current through it only after you turn the ignition switch. In other words, they basically cut out the middle man (antitheft system)and replaced it with a fuse (not the fuse in the fusebox, but an extra fuse between the fuel pump wire and the fusebox). The only thing that was preventing my car from turning on was that the fuse was completely melted together. I put a brand new fuse and my car cranked right up. I will look for more details to help you guys find the right wire to supply power to the fuel pump. I will let you in on more details.
